Gallbladder Surgery
Laparoscopic gallbladder removal for gallstones, polyps, and gallbladder disease with minimal scarring and faster recovery
Procedure Overview
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard surgical treatment for gallbladder disease. This minimally invasive procedure involves removing the gallbladder through small incisions using specialized instruments and a camera. Dr. Mahmoud Abdelwahab performs laparoscopic cholecystectomy, offering patients faster recovery times, less postoperative pain, and minimal scarring compared to traditional open surgery.
45-90 minutes depending on complexity

When is Gallbladder Surgery Needed?
Recurrent biliary colic, right upper quadrant pain after meals, nausea and vomiting
Inflammation of the gallbladder requiring urgent or early surgical intervention
Polyps larger than 10mm or showing growth on serial imaging
Long-standing gallbladder inflammation causing persistent symptoms
Gallstones causing pancreatic inflammation
Calcified gallbladder wall with increased cancer risk
Benefits of Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
Minimal Scarring
Small incisions (5-10mm) result in excellent cosmetic outcomes
Faster Recovery
Most patients return to normal activities within 1-2 weeks
Less Pain
Significantly reduced postoperative pain compared to open surgery
Shorter Hospital Stay
Same-day discharge or overnight observation in most cases
Lower Infection Risk
Smaller incisions reduce the risk of wound infections
Quicker Return to Work
Most patients resume work within 1-2 weeks
Preparing for Surgery
Fasting for 6-8 hours before surgery. Stop certain medications (blood thinners) as instructed. Shower with antibacterial soap the night before.
Abdominal ultrasound, liver function tests, CBC, and coagulation profile.
Recovery Timeline
Rest at home, manage pain with prescribed medications, start with clear liquids and gradually advance diet as tolerated. Mild shoulder pain from surgical gas is normal and will resolve.
Gradually increase activity, short walks encouraged. Resume normal diet avoiding fatty foods initially. Most patients experience significant improvement in pain and energy levels.
Return to work for desk jobs (week 1-2) or light physical work (week 2-3). Avoid heavy lifting (>10kg) for 4 weeks. Incisions continue to heal and fade.
Full recovery achieved. Resume all normal activities including exercise and heavy lifting. Scars continue to fade and become less noticeable over time.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
- •Fever above 38.5°C (101.3°F)
- •Severe abdominal pain not controlled by medication
- •Persistent nausea and vomiting
- •Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
